Press release
Geneva – July 21, 2024
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored that Egyptian security forces raided the home of journalist Khaled Mamdouh in the Mokattam area, south of Cairo, on Tuesday, July 16. Following the raid, Mamdouh was arrested and has since been forcibly disappeared.
According to a family member of Mamdouh, the security forces stormed the house shortly before dawn, conducted a search, and confiscated his laptop and mobile phone.
The family member added that the security personnel arrived when Mamdouh was not at home. They waited for his return, reviewed street surveillance footage to track his movements, and arrested him upon his arrival. His current whereabouts and condition remain unknown. His family has sent urgent telegrams to the Ministries of Interior and Justice, seeking information on his fate.
Khaled Mamdouh is known for his work as a sports journalist and has previously worked in translation. He has had a 15-year career at Maspero and later worked for MBC Egypt. His writings have focused on international issues rather than local affairs.
CFJ calls the Egyptian authorities to urgently disclose the fate of Khaled Mamdouh and to release him immediately and unconditionally. CFJ also urges an end to the targeting of journalists and media professionals for their work or opinions.
