The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of detainee Ahmed Ibrahim Ali Ibrahim Al‑Shaarawi (52 years old), from Kafr Abaza village in Zagazig district, Sharqia Governorate, following a health emergency while in detention.
According to information documented by CFJ, Al‑Shaarawi had been held in pretrial detention for approximately four months in connection with a misdemeanor case at Zagazig Police Station. Available information indicates that he suffered from a severe rise in body temperature while in custody, which necessitated his transfer to Al‑Ahrar Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit before his death was announced.
Al‑Shaarawi’s funeral was subsequently held, and he was buried in the early hours of 29 July 2026.
With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 37 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
