The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Mohamed Oweida inside Al‑Raml Second Police Station in Alexandria Governorate, in an incident that has prompted calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to statements made by the deceased’s family, they alleged that police personnel were responsible for his death as a result of torture while he was in custody. The family further stated that an official police report attributed the death to a heart attack, and claimed that they were subjected to pressure to sign the report, according to their account.
The Committee for Justice stresses the importance of conducting a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into all deaths occurring in places of detention, ensuring accountability where violations are established, and guaranteeing the rights of victims and their families to truth and justice.
With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 38 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
