The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented protest vigils organized by workers of the Cairo Drinking Water and Wastewater Company in front of the headquarters of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater in the Rod El‑Farag area, alongside parallel protests held at a number of company branches, demanding the payment of financial allowances delayed since 2016 and the permanent appointment of workers who have spent years employed under temporary contracts.
According to CFJ’s documentation, the protests involved employees, bill collectors, and meter readers from several branches, including Al‑Zaytoun, Ain Al‑Sira, and Helwan, who called for the payment of their outstanding financial entitlements and the resolution of their temporary employment status.
Available information indicates that the Chairman of the Holding Company met with the protesters and proposed the payment of two allowances at the beginning of the current month, with the remaining allowances to be paid in installments over a period of three years. However, the protesters rejected the proposal and insisted on the full implementation of their demands. Protest activities also reportedly continued in some branches despite calls by local managers to end them.
The Committee for Justice stressed that the rights to fair wages and job security are fundamental rights of workers, and called on the relevant authorities to respond to the workers’ legitimate demands and ensure respect for their labor rights in accordance with applicable laws and relevant standards.
