Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the arrest of economic expert Abd el-Khalek Farouk by Egyptian security forces from his home and his transfer to an undisclosed location, according to a statement made by his wife on her personal account.
– Denial of medical treatment:
Farouk’s wife reported that security forces took her 67-year-old husband without allowing him access to his essential medical treatment, causing the family to worry about his health. This arrest took place without any available information on the reasons behind this action.
– Previous arrest:
Abdel Khalek Farouk has been arrested before. In October 2018, Egyptian authorities detained him after the publication of his book, “Is Egypt Really Poor?”, which sparked widespread debate about the country’s economic policies. He was released later.
In this context, human rights lawyer Nasser Amin stated that the investigation into Farouk began in front of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, with lawyer Hoda Abdel Wahab representing his wife, alongside the presence of Mr. Kamal Abu Aita.
– Condemnation and demand for release:
CFJ condemns the arrest of Abdel Khalek Farouk and calls for his immediate release. The committee emphasized that his repeated arrests raise questions about the treatment of critical voices regarding Egypt’s economic situation.
CFJ also held the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for his safety and well-being, particularly in light of the denial of his medication and the deliberate medical neglect he is suffering.
