Egypt: CFJ Expresses Concerns Over the Fate of Union Leader Shady Ali After His Absence from His Detention Renewal Session, Demands Clarification of His Whereabouts

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has expressed its concerns regarding the fate of Shady Ali Ali Mohamed, a labor leader in the independent union of workers at “Linen Group” for textiles and home furnishings, who is currently held in pretrial detention in Borg Al-Arab Prison. He has been on a total hunger strike for 20 days in protest against the inhumane conditions of his detention.

This comes after his wife announced on February 18 that he did not appear at his detention renewal session in the consultation chamber. The following day, she filed a second complaint with the Egyptian Public Prosecutor, numbered 1119402, demanding clarification of her husband’s whereabouts.

In her complaint, she stated: “I had previously submitted complaint number 1102820 regarding my husband, Shady Ali Ali Mohamed, who is in pretrial detention. I reported that the administration of the 10th of Ramadan Rehabilitation 6 Prison had stripped him of all his personal belongings and suddenly transferred him to Borg Al-Arab Prison.”

She added that “the admission ward he is currently in is severely overcrowded, making it impossible for him to sleep except once every two days. The conditions are completely inhumane, and he has started a total hunger strike in protest against his deteriorating situation inside Borg Al-Arab Prison.”

The wife also noted that Tuesday, February 18, was the scheduled date for her husband’s detention renewal hearing in case number 1644 of 2024, via a video conference session held in Badr. However, she was shocked that he was not presented before the court. She stated: “I urgently request intervention, as I fear that my husband may have suffered harm or that his life is in danger.”

For its part, CFJ calls on the Egyptian Ministry of Interior and the Prison Authority to clarify Shady’s fate and disclose his health condition, particularly in light of his ongoing hunger strike. The committee affirms its solidarity with him and urges his immediate and unconditional release.
