Egypt: CFJ condemns medical negligence and mistreatment of human rights lawyer Ibrahim Metwally and demands his immediate release

Press Release

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has denounced the ongoing medical negligence towards human rights lawyer Ibrahim Metwally, who has been denied essential healthcare despite his worsening condition and severe prostate enlargement.

The committee reiterated its demand for Metwally’s immediate release and the dismissal of all charges against him, which have kept him in extended pretrial detention in state security-related cases for many years.

CFJ revealed that Metwally has been suffering since his incarceration in case number 786 of 2020 under harsh detention conditions, including being denied a necessary prostate surgery. This denial persisted despite repeated requests from his family, even when they offered to cover the expenses themselves.

In 2022, the Public Prosecution requested a medical report on his condition. However, the prison administration stated that he did not require surgery and prescribed medication instead, which prolonged his suffering.

CFJ condemns Metwally’s continued arbitrary detention, which is part of a broader pattern of retaliatory actions against him for his work advocating for forcibly disappeared persons, providing legal support to their families, and collaborating with international mechanisms.

CFJ holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for his safety and insists on his immediate release, the disclosure of the fate of his son who has been missing for over a decade, the accountability of those responsible for these violations, and guarantees that such abuses are not repeated.
