The CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from April 19 to 24, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of the legal situation related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Justice Committee (CFJ) has issued its weekly bulletin on the latest developments in major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was launched to facilitate access to information on hearing dates and updates on human rights cases in a simplified and accessible format. The updates for the period from April 19 to 24, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Case Name: Al-Behira Cell

    • Date: Saturday, April 19, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, decided to postpone the trial of 21 defendants in Case No. 374 of 2024, known in the media as the “Al-Behira Cell,” to the next session on May 17, for further pleadings. It is worth noting that there are 10 defendants currently in custody, while 11 defendants remain at large.

 

  1. Case Name: Nour al-Din Zinki Organization

    • Date: Saturday, April 19, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, decided to postpone the trial of three defendants in Case No. 387 of 2024, known in the media as the “Nour al-Din Zinki Organization” affiliated with Jabhat al-Nusra, to the next session on May 17, for further pleadings.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Badrashin Violence Events

    • Date: Saturday, April 19, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of the First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, issued a ruling in the retrial of defendant Mahmoud Mostafa Talaat Abu Hishima, in the case known in the media as the “Al-Badrashin Violence Events.” He was sentenced to three years in prison for the charges brought against him. The court also ordered that he be placed under police surveillance for three years after serving his sentence. Additionally, the court ordered that both the convicted individual and the entity he belongs to—namely, the Muslim Brotherhood—be included on the lists of terrorist entities and individuals. The court ruled to dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood, close its headquarters and locations inside and outside the country, and ordered the convicted individual to bear the criminal costs and confiscate the seized items.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Nozha Cell

    • Date: Sunday, April 20, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of the First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, decided to postpone the retrial of defendant Ahmed Rabei Mahmoud Shaaban, who was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in Case No. 7449 of 2922 (Al-Nozha), for charges of joining a terrorist group and smuggling money abroad. The case is known in the media as the “Al-Nozha Cell,” to the next session on May 18, to hear witness testimonies.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Azhar University Events

    • Date: Sunday, April 20, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of the First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, reserved the retrial proceedings of defendant Ayman Mohamed Abdel Hamid, listed as No. 35 in the referral order of Case No. 7399 of 2013 (Misdemeanor of Second Nasr City), known in the media as the “Al-Azhar University Events,” for the next session on June 15, for the verdict announcement. It is worth noting that the defendant had been sentenced in absentia to five years of rigorous imprisonment and five years of police surveillance starting after the completion of his prison term.

 

  1. Case Name: Dispersal of Rabaa Al-Adawiya Sit-In

    • Date: Sunday, April 20, 2025
    • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    • Details: The First Circuit of the First Instance Felony Court, presided over by Judge Mohamed Said El-Sharbeni, decided to postpone the retrial of nine defendants who were sentenced in absentia to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment in the case known in the media as the “Dispersal of Rabaa Al-Adawiya Sit-In,” to the next session on May 18, for review.
