Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Inclusion of 28 Journalists on a “Wanted” List in Port Sudan and Calls for the Protection of Press Freedom

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the circulation of lists containing the names of 28 journalists and media professionals reportedly wanted by the State Security Prosecution in the city of Port Sudan, in a development that raises serious concerns over the state of press freedom and the safety of media workers in Sudan.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the list includes a number of journalists, among them: Al‑Jameel Al‑Fadil, Sabah Mohamed Al‑Hassan, Dalia Elias, Safaa Al‑Fahl, Rasha Awad, Al‑Shareef Al‑Hamdabi, Tasabeeh Khater, Shawqi Abdel‑Azim, Faisal Mohamed Saleh, Mohamed Latif, Bakri Al‑Madani, Mohamed Hassan Al‑Boushi, Mortada Al‑Ghalli, Mostafa Youssef Al‑Halfawi, Awad Adlan, Maher Abu Al‑Jouk, Adel Sayed Ahmed Khalifa, Samar Suleiman, Zuhair Al‑Sirraj, Nafisa Hajar, Nadine Alaa Eldin, Ali Farsab, Qorashi Awad, Ammar Al‑Khalifa, Mujahid Nail, Dalia Al‑Tahir, Ali Osman Ismail (Abu Dah), and Mohamed Al‑Hassan Shattorab.

These reports have sparked widespread reactions amid the absence of any official clarification regarding the legal basis of such measures or the nature of the accusations, raising questions about their compatibility with legal safeguards and the freedom of journalistic work.

The Committee for Justice believes that the inclusion of this number of journalists on wanted lists—if confirmed—may constitute a disturbing escalation that undermines freedom of expression and increases the risks faced by journalists under the current circumstances.

CFJ calls for transparent clarification of the legal status of these measures, ensuring that journalists are not targeted for their professional work, respecting their right to carry out their role without threat or persecution, and adhering to national and international standards governing press freedom.
