The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the deaths of two detainees from the town of Buram in South Darfur State inside Dagris Prison, west of the city of Nyala, following months of detention by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to testimonies from their relatives and former detainees who were recently released.
According to information documented by CFJ, the deceased were Idris Mohamed Saleh, Director of the Civil Service Office in Buram locality, and Ahmed Ismail Hussein. Former detainees informed their families of their deaths inside the prison, despite the absence of any official notification from the authority responsible for their detention.
Available information indicates that Idris Mohamed Saleh was arrested in February 2026 during an arrest campaign in the town of Buram and was subsequently transferred to Dagris Prison. His family reported that he was denied medical treatment, healthcare, and adequate food, and that he died approximately one month after his detention. Testimonies from released detainees also indicated that Ahmed Ismail Hussein died inside the prison during June 2026, without any information being provided regarding the cause of death or the fate of his body.
The Committee for Justice stressed that the continued detention of civilians incommunicado, coupled with the lack of official notification to families regarding their condition or death, raises serious concerns about the situation of detainees held inside Dagris Prison.
CFJ calls for the disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the detainees, the announcement of the fate of all individuals held inside Dagris Prison, and guarantees that their families are provided with information regarding their conditions. The Committee also calls for independent bodies to be granted access to places of detention in order to assess and verify the conditions of detainees.
