As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance coordination and cooperation between regional mechanisms, human rights institutions, and human rights defenders, CFJ held a consultative meeting on March 12, 2025. The meeting gathered the Joint Fact-Finding Mission of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Peace and Security Council, and six Sudanese human rights organizations.
This meeting was held in response to the grave human rights violations witnessed in Sudan since the outbreak of armed conflict in April 2023. These violations included serious abuses such as arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, gender-based violence, targeting of medical personnel and facilities, and restrictions on civil liberties.
The meeting aimed to enhance Sudanese human rights institutions’ understanding of the Fact-Finding Mission’s mandate and procedures, particularly regarding how to present oral testimonies and prepare written reports. Additionally, it sought to provide these institutions with an opportunity to present and document the violations they have observed and to engage directly with the Fact-Finding Mission to ensure accurate and transparent information sharing.
Furthermore, the meeting focused on strengthening Sudanese civil society’s engagement with regional mechanisms, including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Peace and Security Council. This engagement aims to bolster accountability efforts and achieve justice for victims, particularly in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and human rights violations in Sudan.
For its part, CFJ reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting human rights defenders and Sudanese human rights organizations, facilitating their voices’ reach to regional and international platforms. The committee emphasized its firm belief in the crucial role of civil society in exposing violations and advocating for justice and accountability, especially given the challenging circumstances Sudan is currently facing.
