The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has welcomed the release of academics Mohamed Sharaf El‑Din Al‑Fitouri, 72, and Abu Bakr Al‑Jarari on the evening of 10 October 2026, after six days of detention and enforced disappearance in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
According to information documented by CFJ, their release came following the direct intervention of the Attorney General, Counselor Al‑Siddiq Al‑Sour, after the location of their detention and the authority responsible for their arbitrary arrest had reportedly been identified. The Committee stressed that their release does not eliminate the legal responsibility arising from the violations allegedly committed against the two academics during their detention.
CFJ emphasized that the incident should be treated as a serious violation warranting accountability, noting that the release of the detainees does not negate the need to clarify the circumstances of their detention, the conditions surrounding their enforced disappearance, or the responsibility of those involved.
The Committee for Justice calls for the opening of a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation into the detention and enforced disappearance of Mohamed Sharaf El‑Din Al‑Fitouri and Abu Bakr Al‑Jarari, with the aim of identifying all responsible parties and bringing them to justice.
CFJ further stresses the importance of ensuring accountability and ending impunity, while adopting measures to prevent the recurrence of violations affecting personal liberty, academic freedom, and the rule of law in Libya.
