The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a protest held by families and relatives of several prisoners and detainees at the Tripoli Main Reform and Rehabilitation Facility (Mitiga), in front of the offices of the Libyan Attorney General and the Presidential Council, demanding guarantees for the legal rights of their detained relatives.
According to CFJ’s documentation, participants in the protest called for the implementation of release orders issued by civilian and military courts for a number of detainees, the guarantee that they are presented before prosecution offices and courts within the legally stipulated deadlines, and their transfer to the competent investigative and judicial authorities. Families also urged the acceleration of judicial procedures to ensure justice is achieved.
Protesters emphasized the need to guarantee regular visitation rights, improve detainees’ conditions inside the facility, and ensure respect for their fundamental rights in a manner that preserves their human dignity, amid recurring complaints of mistreatment within the institution.
CFJ also noted that families expressed concern over reports that some detainees have begun a hunger strike in protest against what they described as ill‑treatment by the prison administration, urging the Attorney General to intervene urgently to address the legal and humanitarian conditions inside the facility.
The Committee for Justice stated that these demands reflect alarming conditions that require immediate intervention to ensure respect for the rule of law and the protection of detainees’ rights.
CFJ calls on the Libyan authorities—foremost among them the Office of the Attorney General—to immediately implement the issued release orders, ensure that detainees are brought before competent judicial bodies without delay, and open an investigation into the reported mistreatment inside Mitiga Prison. The Committee also urges urgent action to improve detention conditions and ensure full respect for the legal and human rights of all prisoners and detainees.
