Libya: Committee for Justice Documents Death of Prisoner in Al‑Kuwayfiyah Prison in Benghazi Due to Torture and Medical Neglect

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Libyan citizen Abdelmalek Al‑Sharif inside the Al‑Kuwayfiyah Correction and Rehabilitation Facility in Benghazi on 11 February 2026, amid allegations from his family that he was subjected to physical abuse, torture, and medical neglect during his detention.

According to information gathered by CFJ, the family stated that Al‑Sharif had been scheduled for release on 21 January 2026, following the completion of his sentence and due to his deteriorating health condition; however, the release order was not implemented. Available reports indicate that he suffered from chronic illnesses, and that his health significantly worsened inside the facility as a result of not receiving the medical care he urgently required.

CFJ noted that the circumstances surrounding his detention raise serious concerns regarding violations of detainee rights, particularly those related to the implementation of judicial rulings, the obligation to provide adequate medical treatment, and adherence to national and international standards for the treatment of prisoners.

The committee stressed that the allegations of mistreatment, torture, and medical neglect are extremely serious and may entail legal responsibility for those involved. CFJ affirmed that it is closely monitoring the case and emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the causes of death to ensure full accountability should any violations be confirmed.
