Press Release
The United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People has voiced grave concern over the blatant disregard by Israeli authorities for resolutions issued by the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), particularly concerning the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement issued on December 15, 2024, the committee stressed that Israeli authorities have failed to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1860 (2009), which calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of the blockade imposed on the territory. This ongoing non-compliance continues to exacerbate the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The committee also emphasized that Israeli authorities persist in defying the ICJ’s July 2004 advisory opinion, which deemed the construction of the separation wall in the occupied Palestinian territories a violation of international law. The opinion called for the wall’s dismantlement and compensation for those affected.
The repeated violations, according to the committee, undermine international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region. The committee underscored the urgency for the international community to take immediate action to ensure that Israeli authorities comply with their legal obligations and protect the rights of the Palestinian people, including their legitimate right to self-determination.
Additionally, the committee called on UN member states to step up humanitarian and political support for the Palestinian people, to address the worsening challenges resulting from Israeli policies.
