Egypt: The CFJ Reports Death of Political Detainee Inside 10th of Ramadan Prison Due to Deliberate Medical Neglect

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of detainee Hamdy Youssef Hashem (62 years old) on the morning of April 20, 2025, inside the medical center of 10th of Ramadan Prison due to deliberate medical neglect that persisted for years.

The deceased had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis along with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes but did not receive the necessary medical care during his detention, despite his health condition continuously deteriorating, which ultimately led to his death.

It is worth noting that “Hashem” was arbitrarily arrested on November 26, 2019, and subjected to what is known as “recycling of detention” (renewed detention) multiple times across different cases. He was being held in connection with case number 2215 of 2022, Supreme State Security, until his death.

The CFJ demands an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death and accountability for those responsible for the neglect that cost him his life. The committee also calls for the immediate release of all detainees suffering from serious illnesses or whose critical health conditions warrant their release, affirming that their continued detention violates national and international human rights laws.

With these cases, the number of deaths documented by the CFJ inside prisons and detention centers in Egypt since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 12. This follows the documentation of 50 deaths during the previous year, 2024.

Verified information about deaths during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the “Justice Watch Archive,” a service provided by the CFJ. It contains information on over 14,000 victims and more than 30,000 violations, monitoring abuses across over 500 detention sites in Egypt.
