The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the 15th death inside Egyptian detention centers and prisons during the current year 2025, where the political detainee Ahmed Abdel Aal El-Gendy (62 years old), an English teacher holding a BA in Arabic Language from the Faculty of Arts, passed away.
El-Gendy was arrested from Kerdasa Center in Giza Governorate. He had previously been detained from 1995 until 2011, then was re-arrested again in 2013, and remained in detention until his death on Sunday, May 11, 2025, inside Wadi El-Natroun Prison, due to deliberate medical negligence and deteriorating detention conditions.
The CFJ condemns this case of death and calls for an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death, as well as holding accountable those responsible for the negligence that resulted in the loss of his life.
With these cases, the number of deaths documented by the CFJ inside prisons and detention centers in Egypt since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 15. This follows the documentation of 50 deaths during the previous year, 2024.
Verified information about deaths during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the “Justice Watch Archive,” a service provided by the CFJ. It contains information on over 14,000 victims and more than 30,000 violations, monitoring abuses across over 500 detention sites in Egypt.
