Egypt: Committee for Justice Monitors Death of Political Detainee in Abu Zaabal Prison Due to Medical Negligence

The Committee for Justice has monitored the death of Ahmed Hamed Bashandy, a 68-year-old political detainee, inside Abu Zaabal Prison, reportedly due to medical negligence.

According to CFJ, Bashandy was a retired municipal employee and a resident of Tukh village in Qalyubia Governorate. He suffered a sudden health crisis two days prior to his death and was transferred to Badr Hospital, where he was diagnosed with acute intestinal obstruction before passing away.

Security forces had arrested Bashandy last year while he was traveling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. He was stopped at Cairo Airport, interrogated, and later detained under Case No. 185 of 2023 (Supreme State Security).

CFJ condemned the deliberate medical neglect by Abu Zaabal Prison authorities and held the Egyptian government fully responsible for Bashandy’s death. The organization called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death, accountability for those responsible, and an end to impunity.

With this case, the number of deaths monitored by CFJ inside Egyptian prisons and detention centers since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 46, following the documentation of 50 deaths throughout 2024.
