The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Moaz Ahmed Hamid, a young Sudanese national, inside Al‑Mokattam Police Station in Cairo after approximately eight days in detention, following notification to his family to report to the police station to receive his body.
According to sources close to Moaz’s family, he died during his period of detention. As of the time of documentation, no official information has been released clarifying the circumstances or cause of his death.
The Committee for Justice stresses the importance of conducting a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into all deaths occurring in places of detention, ensuring that the circumstances of death are fully disclosed and that any responsibility for violations or negligence is addressed in accordance with the law.
With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 49 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
