Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents the Death of Political Detainee Haitham Obeid Inside 10th of Ramadan Prison Hospital

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Haitham Obeid inside the hospital of 10th of Ramadan Prison, following a severe deterioration in his health condition after years of pretrial detention in multiple cases dating back to 2017.

According to available information, Obeid had been suffering from a liver disease prior to a further decline in his health during detention. His condition reportedly progressed to kidney failure and tuberculosis, ultimately resulting in his death inside the prison hospital.

The Committee for Justice stresses the importance of ensuring adequate healthcare for all detainees and conducting transparent investigations into deaths occurring in places of detention, particularly in cases involving serious or chronic medical conditions.

With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 53 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
