The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Eng. Abdel‑Aal Ali Ali Abdel‑Rebah Khodeira (67), former First Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport, from the village of Wardan in the Manshat Al‑Qanater district of Giza Governorate. He died inside his place of detention at Borg Al‑Arab Prison on Saturday, 31 January 2026.
According to CFJ’s documentation, the death resulted from medical negligence and the poor conditions of detention. Khodeira had suffered from viral hepatitis for an entire year and submitted multiple requests for medical treatment and proper healthcare. However, the prison administration repeatedly refused to provide the necessary care, leading to a severe deterioration in his condition, the onset of septicemia, and ultimately his death inside the prison.
CFJ affirmed that the denial of adequate healthcare to political detainees constitutes a grave violation of the right to life and of the Minimum Standards for the Treatment of Prisoners, and contravenes both domestic and international legal obligations regarding the provision of medical care in places of detention.
Khodeira’s family received his body and buried him on 1 February 2026 in his hometown of Wardan, amid widespread grief among residents and his family of ten children.
The Committee for Justice holds the relevant authorities fully responsible for the death of political detainee Eng. Abdel‑Aal Khodeira as a result of medical negligence. CFJ calls for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death, accountability for all those responsible for denying him access to medical care, and immediate guarantees that all political detainees receive full and prompt healthcare inside detention facilities, in a manner that preserves their dignity and right to life.
