The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of citizen Tarek Ashraf El-Sayed Mahfouz while in custody at Al-Haram Police Station, under circumstances that raise serious concerns about possible torture or ill‑treatment prior to his death, particularly given the visible injuries reported on his body.

According to information documented by CFJ, Mahfouz had been detained at Al-Haram Police Station since 3 December following a domestic dispute. On 24 December, his mother received a call informing her that his health had deteriorated. She immediately went to the station with his brother, only to discover upon arrival that he had passed away.

The victim’s brother stated that he examined the body and observed clear injuries consistent with beating and possibly torture. The family subsequently went to the Al‑Haram Prosecution and filed an official complaint demanding an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances and true cause of death. The case was registered under Report No. 20217/2025 – Administrative, Al‑Haram Police Station.

CFJ emphasizes that the death of any individual inside a place of detention requires an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation, along with accountability for all responsible parties should violations be proven. The organization warns that impunity only encourages the recurrence of torture and ill‑treatment within police stations and detention facilities.

The Committee also calls on the Public Prosecution to promptly disclose the results of the investigation, ensure the family’s right to truth and justice, and take the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
