Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents Seven Suicide Attempts by Political Detainees in New Valley Prison Amid Harsh Conditions

سجن الوادي الجديد

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented seven suicide attempts by political detainees in New Valley Prison, all of whom were rescued at the last moment—a highly alarming indicator of the humanitarian and psychological situation inside the facility.

According to available information, these attempts were a direct result of harsh detention conditions and continuous psychological pressure faced by the detainees, amid the absence of adequate mental health support and medical care, and the persistence of isolation and punitive measures.

CFJ stresses that the recurrence of such life-ending attempts reflects a state of extreme despair and hopelessness among detainees and underscores the responsibility of prison authorities to ensure a safe detention environment that meets the minimum human standards.

In this context, detainees continue to demand their transfer to other prisons, as remaining in New Valley Prison has become a real threat to their lives and safety, given what they describe as inhumane conditions and systematic violations.

The Committee holds the relevant authorities fully accountable for the lives and safety of political detainees in New Valley Prison and calls for an urgent investigation into these incidents, alongside immediate measures to improve detention conditions and guarantee the right to healthcare and psychological support in line with the constitution and international standards.
