Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents Retaliatory Measures Against Detainees in Abu Zaabal Liman 2 Prison and Calls for an End to Violations

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a retaliatory inspection and strip‑search campaign carried out inside the criminal prisoners’ ward at Abu Zaabal Liman 2 Prison, lasting for three consecutive days, following reports of the death of an inmate inside a punishment cell on 20 January.

According to CFJ’s monitoring, the campaign resulted in confiscation of all personal belongings and blankets, in addition to detainees being subjected to physical assaults, verbal abuse, and threats of forced transfer to other prisons.

CFJ stressed that these collective punitive measures constitute a blatant violation of detainees’ rights, including the rights to physical and psychological integrity, and the right to humane treatment in accordance with national laws and international standards. Such actions severely undermine detainees’ dignity and safety.

The committee called on the relevant authorities to take urgent steps to protect detainees inside the prison, and to open an independent and transparent investigation into both the death incident and the retaliatory inspection campaign. CFJ also demanded accountability for those responsible for the violations and firm guarantees to prevent the recurrence of torture, ill‑treatment, and forced transfers inside detention facilities.
