Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents National Security Summons of 10 Workers from “Edfu Sugar Factory” Over Planned Strike

The Committee for Justice has documented the summoning of ten workers from the Edfu Sugar Factory in Aswan Governorate by Egypt’s National Security Agency, affiliated with the Ministry of Interior. The factory is part of the Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, which operates under the Holding Company for Food Industries.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the workers were summoned to receive warnings from National Security officers against engaging in any strike action or protest in the coming period. The officers reportedly threatened punitive measures should such actions occur.

The workers stated that they met with a National Security officer who acknowledged the legitimacy of some of their demands, particularly those related to wages and the minimum wage. However, he also threatened immediate punishment if they proceeded with any strike or sit-in.

The Committee for Justice expresses its solidarity with the workers of the Edfu Sugar Factory in Aswan, emphasizing their right to demand fair treatment, especially amid the harsh economic conditions they are facing. CFJ also strongly condemns the intimidation tactics employed by security authorities against workers.

The Committee calls on the relevant authorities and Egypt’s Ministry of Manpower to urgently intervene to resolve the crisis, address the workers’ wage-related demands, and ensure their legitimate rights are upheld. CFJ stresses the importance of protecting workers’ rights and preserving their dignity.
