Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents Deteriorating Health Conditions and Disease Outbreaks Among Detainees in Montazah Third Police Station in Alexandria, Calls for Urgent Intervention

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a severe deterioration in the health and living conditions of detainees held inside Montazah Third Police Station in Alexandria, amid extreme overcrowding in detention rooms that lack the minimum standards of health and safety.

According to CFJ’s findings, skin diseases have spread widely among detainees due to the large number of individuals held in confined spaces with inadequate ventilation and insufficient sanitary conditions. Complaints also indicated that detainees are being denied access to ventilation, exercise, and sunlight, and are prevented from airing clothes and bedding—conditions that have led to the proliferation of disease‑carrying insects and worsening foul odors within the facility, further aggravating skin infections among the detainees.

Additional complaints highlighted the widespread presence of various narcotics inside detention rooms, along with heavy smoking in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces, which has caused a noticeable increase in respiratory illnesses among detainees. These conditions are compounded by the absence of an adequate health environment or effective medical care.

CFJ also documented reports of physical and psychological abuse against several detainees, as well as the imposition of extortion practices within the detention facility, all of which constitute grave violations of their physical and mental integrity.

The Committee calls for an urgent investigation into the conditions inside Montazah Third Police Station and for immediate measures to reduce overcrowding, improve health and living standards, ensure proper ventilation, and provide necessary medical care. CFJ further urges the cessation of all forms of physical and psychological abuse and demands accountability for those responsible for any violations, in order to guarantee respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of detainees in accordance with national law and international standards.
