The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Sudanese youth Mohamed Adam Youssef, following his detention by Egyptian police, amid allegations of torture and ill‑treatment during his custody.
According to information gathered by CFJ, Mohamed Adam Youssef had left 10th of Ramadan City heading to Maadi on Saturday, 31 January, carrying a valid UNHCR asylum card as well as an appointment to complete his residency procedures. His brother later reported that his body was found on 11 February in one of Cairo’s morgues, allegedly bearing burn marks and signs of torture, according to the family’s account.
Initial information indicates that the victim disappeared shortly after departing 10th of Ramadan City, before his family received notification that his body was being held at the morgue. As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by the authorities clarifying the circumstances of his death or the cause.
CFJ emphasized that it is closely monitoring the case, given the seriousness of the torture allegations and the fact that the victim was a UNHCR‑registered asylum seeker, which should have afforded him specific legal protections as a person seeking international protection. Any harm inflicted under such circumstances constitutes a grave violation of the rights to life and physical integrity.
CFJ called for an urgent clarification of the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensuring full transparency in investigation procedures, and enabling the family to access the forensic report, in line with standards of justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
