The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of political detainee Ibrahim El-Sayed Abdallah El-Sabbagh, aged 60, inside Gamasa Prison following a severe deterioration in his health condition.
According to CFJ, El-Sabbagh was serving a prison sentence in case No. 2561/2013, Administrative Third Ismailia Police Department, known in the media as the Ismailia Courthouse Fire Case.
Two months ago, El-Sabbagh suffered a serious health crisis later diagnosed as gallbladder obstruction along with a cancerous tumor. Despite his worsening condition, he did not receive adequate medical care inside the prison until his health deteriorated further, after which he was transferred late to Mansoura Hospital, where he died yesterday due to complications.
The deceased was originally from Sarabium village in Ismailia Governorate and was arrested in 2014 to serve a 15-year sentence related to the courthouse fire case.
CFJ condemned the deliberate medical neglect by Gamasa Prison administration that led to El-Sabbagh’s death, holding Egyptian authorities accountable for the incident. The committee called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death, the prosecution of those responsible, and measures to end impunity.
