Egypt: CFJ reports severe abuses including sexual harassment against female detainees at Zagazig Police Station

Press release
Geneva – July 16, 2024

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored egregious human rights violations against female detainees at the Zagazig Police Station in the Sharqia Governorate, Egypt. These violations include sexual harassment by officers and security personnel at the station, as well as instances of physical assault and threats.

CFJ highlighted that these abuses are primarily perpetrated by the station’s detective officer, Captain Hani Mansour, who resides in Bandaf village, Minya al-Qamh district, Sharqia. He is reportedly assisted by informant Mohamed El-Saeedi and a security guard named Gamal.

A former inmate, who witnessed the abuses, described the situation as catastrophic. She reported that the female detainees, particularly those held on criminal charges, are subjected to invasive searches conducted personally by the aforementioned police officer and security personnel. This practice exposes the detainees to sexual harassment, physical violence, and verbal threats.

CFJ calls for an immediate halt to these violations and demands accountability for those responsible. CFJ urges the initiation of an impartial, transparent, and swift investigation into these incidents to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and do not escape punishment.
