Egypt: CFJ documents death of political detainee in Wadi al-Natrun prison due to medical neglect

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) documents the death of political detainee Ibrahim Eid Saqr, a resident of Abu al-Matamir in Beheira Governorate, inside Wadi al-Natrun Prison.

According to CFJ, Saqr had been in good health but suffered a sudden and severe heart attack while performing the noon prayer with fellow detainees in his cell. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he died immediately.

Security forces had arrested Saqr on 17 April 2017. He had been working in trade and private business before being sentenced in absentia by a military court to 10 years in prison in the case known in the media as the “Hosh Eissa police station fire.” He was undergoing retrial at the time of his death.

CFJ condemns the deliberate medical neglect by Wadi al-Natrun Prison authorities, holds the Egyptian authorities responsible for Saqr’s death, and calls for an investigation into the circumstances, accountability for those responsible, and an end to impunity.

According to CFJ, this case raises the number of deaths in custody documented in Egypt since the beginning of 2025 to 44, after recording 50 deaths during 2024.

Accurate information about death cases during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the Justice Watch Archive service provided by CFJ, which contains information about more than 14,000 victims and over 30,000 violations. It also monitors violations inside more than 500 places of detention in Egypt.
