Geneva: August 8, 2023

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) documented a new death case due to torture at a detention center in Egypt. The victim, Ramy Hussein, died on Monday, August 7, 2023, inside Dar Al-Salam police station in Cairo.

Tortured to Death:

The deceased’s brother, Mohammad Hussein, wrote a post on Facebook stating that his brother died inside Dar Al-Salam police station at the hands of an officer named Abdurrahman Ragaei, who tortured him for refusing to work as an informant for the security forces. “Dar Al-Salam police station killed my brother. Ramy, my brother, was killed. Dar Al-Salam department killed him, and what was his sin? Because he refused to inform on others.” Mohammed wrote on Facebook.

Mohammad posted a picture of his brother’s body carried on a medical stretcher with blood flowing from his head and signs of torture on his body.

End Systematic Torture:

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) calls on the Egyptian authorities to open a serious and transparent investigation into this death case and to hold those responsible accountable. CFJ reiterates its call on the Egyptian authorities to stop systematic torture inside detention centers and prisons, hold every law enforcement officer who resorts to torture accountable, and prevent impunity for such crimes.

23 Death Cases Since the Beginning of 2023:

With Ramy’s death, the number of death cases documented by CFJ inside Egyptian detention centers since the start of 2023 have risen to 23. The last recorded cases were the deaths of Mahmoud Abdel Jawad, (33 years old), who died due to torture at Nabaruh Police Station, Dakahlia governorate, in the early hours of Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Accurate information about death cases during detention in Egypt can be obtained through the Justice Watch Archive service provided by CFJ, which contains information about more than 14,000 victims and over 30,000 violations. It also monitors violations inside more than 500 places of detention in Egypt.
