Egypt: CFJ Documents Collective Torture Inside Al‑Laban Police Station Detention in Alexandria and Calls for Urgent Investigation

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented serious and multiple injuries sustained by several detainees held in Cell No. (6) inside the Al‑Laban Police Station detention facility in Alexandria, following their exposure to collective torture using batons and sticks. CFJ stated that these practices constitute a flagrant violation of the right to physical integrity and a breach of the absolute prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

According to CFJ, the incident occurred while an inspection committee was present inside the police station, where an elderly detainee in critical health condition was subjected to physical assault and verbal abuse—despite his urgent need for medical attention. When other detainees protested this treatment, they were collectively beaten and insulted, resulting in severe and varied injuries that they continue to suffer from.

CFJ also documented the transfer of several detainees to other cells and the use of restraints, in an apparent retaliatory escalation against them, reflecting a dangerous deterioration in detention conditions and a complete failure to implement protective measures for detainees.

The committee affirmed that these violations constitute a clear breach of national and international human rights standards, and pose a direct threat to the dignity, physical safety, and mental wellbeing of detainees. CFJ calls for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into all reported incidents, the accountability of all individuals involved, and the immediate provision of medical care and protection for all detainees held within the police station.
