Egypt: CFJ Communication Official calls on authorities to amend and reform legal framework to integrate principles of justice and law

Press Release

Usame Mehmetoglu, Regional and UN Communication Officer for the ” Committee for Justice,” highlighted in his address during the ITEM3 session on the human rights situation in Africa, within the activities of the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, that proposed amendments to Egypt’s Procedural Law would have a significant human rights impact on victims’ rights in Egypt.

Oghlu’s address focused on the proposed amendments to the Criminal Procedures Law, which he argued would lead to further repression and a broader restriction of rights and freedoms in Egypt. He also warned that these amendments would legitimize repressive practices by security forces, prosecutors, and the judiciary against political opponents and dissenting voices.

Oghlu stated, “Amendments to the Procedural Law will have a substantial human rights impact on victims’ rights, as the measures taken by Egyptian authorities negatively affect human rights in general, and we call on the authorities to grant detainees their right to legal representation.”

The Regional and UN Communication Officer for CFJ stressed that the new legal amendments would legitimize arbitrary detentions and undermine fair trial standards.

In closing, Oghlu urged Egyptian authorities to amend and reform the legal framework to incorporate and uphold the principles of justice and law. attacks.
