Egypt: CFJ affirms solidarity with “Delta Sugar Co.” workers in their protests and calls for meeting their demands

Press Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) observed that Delta Sugar Company workers in Kafr El-Sheikh organized a protest on Tuesday, October 22, in the company courtyard, calling for the dismissal of the Chairman, Ahmed Abu El-Yazid, his Deputy, Adel Ayoub, and several high-paid consultants whom workers accuse of corruption that impacts the workflow and their rights.

These protests began two days before October 22, as workers’ demands intensified for wage increases in light of soaring prices and to improve their financial conditions to cope with rising costs.

In response to these demands and mounting protest pressure, Abu El-Yazid submitted his resignation. Consequently, the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, appointed Ahmed Sherine Karim as Acting Non-Executive Chairman and Sami Ahmed Abdel Mottaleb as Acting Executive Director.

The ministry described these appointments as part of an “institutional reform” and “restructuring” plan to address future needs; however, it did not directly address the workers’ protests or investigate the corruption allegations against the previous management.

Despite these changes, the workers affirmed their intent to continue protesting until all their demands are met, including an increase in the daily meal allowance, which currently stands at just 15 Egyptian pounds, and an increase in the work nature allowance, which is only 750 pounds per month. They consider these amounts unfair given their efforts and the challenging work conditions.

The workers also insisted on the need to dismiss the Deputy Chairman and consultants who receive substantial salaries without offering tangible services to employees. They called on regulatory authorities to investigate the pervasive corruption within the company and to ensure the new management implements effective anti-corruption measures.

CFJ for its part, reaffirms full solidarity with the workers in their legitimate demands, calling on responsible entities to respond positively to these demands to uphold justice and protect workers’ rights.
