The Committee for Justice (CFJ) expresses grave concern over the increasing number of violent attacks and fatal stabbings reported across The Gambia. Recent incidents of knife-related violence have heightened public fear and created a growing sense of insecurity within communities, raising urgent concerns about the protection of the right to life and personal security.
While each incident is unique and must be investigated on its own merits, the recurring nature of these attacks’ points to a troubling pattern that requires immediate and coordinated action. No one should fear for their safety while going about their daily lives.
The Constitution of The Gambia guarantees every person’s right to life, liberty, and security. The Government also has obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, particularly Articles 4 and 6, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to protect individuals from violence, ensure effective law enforcement, and hold perpetrators accountable.
CFJ welcomes the ongoing investigations by the Gambia Police Force and urges the authorities to ensure that all perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice through fair and transparent judicial processes.
Beyond law enforcement, addressing the rise in knife violence requires stronger community engagement, investment in youth programmes, conflict resolution initiatives, public awareness on non-violent dispute resolution, and measures to address the social and economic factors that contribute to violent crime.
CFJ calls on the Government, law enforcement agencies, community leaders, civil society organisations, and citizens to work collectively to reverse this disturbing trend and restore public confidence in safety and the rule of law. The Gambia has long been recognised as a peaceful nation, and every effort must be made to ensure that violence does not become normalised.
